College can seem like an overwhelming challenge when you’re a student in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction – college campuses often feel abstinence-hostile.
While the stereotypical college experience may create an environment where alcohol or drug consumption is glorified rather than controlled or prevented, there is a clear distinction between self-reported alcohol use and perceived alcohol use. In a nutshell, this means that students – independent of their own reported level of drinking or drug use – believe that their peers drink or use drugs more than they do. Unfortunately, this perception is often accepted as reality and can influence a student in recovery’s decision to attend or not attend college.
MACRO wants students in recovery to know that they do have options. College IS possible! There are several schools in Missouri that have established recovery support services to reinforce this idea, and more schools are being added to the list each year. Students in Missouri can have a successful, enjoyable, and authentic college experience while also maintaining and thriving in their sobriety.
