Compiled here are resources related to drug abuse prevention among college students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><span>Scope<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nationaldata\">National Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) report includes the following selected key findings<sup>1<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">3.1% of people (8.9 million)<\/mark><\/strong> misused opioids in the past year, which is similar to 2022 and 2021 (3.2% and 8.9 million, 3.4% and 9.4 million respectively).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 2017 and 2020, <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">hallucinogen use among college students more than doubled (4.1% compared to 8.6%)<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approximately <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">5.6\u2009% of college students report past-year nonmedical prescription drug use<\/mark><\/strong> with estimates ranging from 8.4\u2009% for prescription stimulants to 3.7\u2009% for prescription opioids.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Among college students,&nbsp;rates of illicit drug use in the past year (other than marijuana) are estimated at about&nbsp;20%<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Common causes of substance use disorder in college students include coping with stress, peer pressure, genetics, and availability of drugs and alcohol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 2025 Monitoring the Future Survey<sup>2<\/sup>, past year use rates for various substances among college students are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any drug use other than cannabis: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">13.9%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hallucinogens (LSD, ketamine, MDMA\/ecstasy): <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">7.3%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amphetamines\/Stimulants:<strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> 4.1%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sedatives\/Tranquilizers (sleeping medications and anti-anxiety medications): <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">0.6%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Methamphetamines: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">0.1%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heroin: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">0.1%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"missouridata\">Missouri Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Among Missouri college students,&nbsp;rates of illicit drug use in the past year (other than marijuana) are estimated at about&nbsp;<mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">11%.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past year, Missouri college students report rates of use as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Delta 8 THC: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">8.3%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hallucinogens:<strong> <mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">4.2%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amphetamines: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">3.1%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cocaine: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1.4%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inhalants: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">0.9%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MDMA\/ecstasy: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">0.7%<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heroin: <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--global-color-8)\" institution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides students with information about campus and community alcohol and other drug prevention, student assistance, and wellness and health promotion resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strategic Planning<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective strategic planning and implementation of strategies at various levels of the socio-ecological model are necessary for drug misuse prevention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"detection\">Detection and Early Intervention of Substance Use Disorders<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/sbirt\">Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)<\/a>&nbsp;is an early intervention approach that is being used in colleges
